Incident narrative
SaferProducts.gov consumer incident report 20230102-F3892-2147351708. Severity: No Incident, No Injury. Product: Goodman Model Desc: 1824 HORIZONTAL BUTT UP (HVAC unit / AC and heat). Incident: This is regarding a Goodman split HVAC unit that caught on fire, which was only resolved by turning off the circuit breaker to the unit. Details of product: Goodman Model: CHPF1824A6 Model Desc: 1824 HORIZONTAL BUTT UP Manufacture Date: 12/01/2017 Serial Number: 1711577748 For two years, we have two of these units in my home. On 12/30 overnight, one unit ran overnight at full power and would not shut off, even when I turned off the [REDACTED] thermostat (which was set to 72-73, and the temp detected was 82). It turned off when I flipped the circuit breaker, however the circuit breaker would not turn back on. HVAC repairperson came same day and smelled that there was a fire inside the HVAC unit furnace. It melted a pipe, some wires, and also melted the safety sticker on the inside of the cover. Thankfully we were at home to shut it off. My electrician wrote, "no safety mechanism worked or worked at the very critical point. There are at least 2-3 heat cut/kill switches on Board which really maxed out before that burning occurred. Terrible terrible. Critical infra failure of the worst kind and kind and yet something at a very last point functioned and blocked the whole thing, you turned off the breaker."
