Incident narrative

SaferProducts.gov consumer incident report 20230115-F7168-2147351387. Severity: Incident, No Injury. Product: Maytag MGDX700XL1 (Gas clothes dryer). Incident: I was drying a load of bath towels. Several minutes passed, when I heard the basement fire alarm go off. Frightened. I grabbed a fire extinguisher and ran downstairs. It smelled like something burning, but I saw no flames. Panicking, I ran through the basement. When I got near the clothes dryer I felt heat. The outside of the dryer was very hot. I immediately pulled the plug, and shut off the gas line. When I opened the dryer, the towels were too hot to touch. A while later, after calming down, I pulled the items from the dryer. They were all scorched! One of the three baffles inside the drum had MELTED, along with the light bulb cover. I reported this to Maytag, via their website, after waiting 30+ minutes, multiple times, on their 800 number. I have not heard back. I question why there was no automatic shutoff.
