Incident narrative

SaferProducts.gov consumer incident report 20230312-E25F7-2147348816. Severity: Injury, Emergency Department Treatment Received. Product: Samsung NE63T8111SS (Kitchen stove, electic). Incident: Electic Stove: Samsung 30 in. 6.3 cu. ft Slide-in Electric Range Model NE63T8111SS. Background: We noticed in January 2023 the top right stove burner was inadvertly turned on and melted a plastic container on the stovetop. I am not clear how the stove burner was inadvertently turned on. The burner control knob on the front panel has to be pushed in and turned for the burner to heat up. Perhaps when the cook is cleaning the stove top, the control knob is inadvertently push in and turned then does not notice the orange color heat indicator on the stove top. On March 3, 2023 about 5pm, we experienced a neighborhood power outage (probably due to downed trees from storms). The power was restored March 4 about 2:30 am while we were asleep. At about 5 am, our kitchen smoke alarm was sounding and woke us up. I rushed to the kitched and saw smoke and fire on the stovetop. My wife was already attempting to extinguish the fire when the fire flared up and caught her hair on fire. She quickly extinguished her hair and rushed to the bathroom while I turned off the front right stovetop burner and continued to extinguish the remaining flames. Apparently, the stovetop burner was inadvertently turned on during the power outage and became hot when power was restored. Our house would have burned down if my wife and I had not extinguished the fire. After the fire was extinguished, I rushed my wife to the emergency room where she was found to have 2nd degree burns on her right hand, face, and neck. She still is suffering physically from the effects of the fire.
