Incident narrative

SaferProducts.gov consumer incident report 20230327-43766-2147348431. Severity: Injury, First Aid Received by Non-Medical Professional. Product: Dash Go DEC005BU (Dash Go (now the company is just called Dash) Egg Cooker in an aqua blue color, approx. 6 inches tall and 7 or 8 inches in diameter. It has a 6-egg capacity for steaming shell-on eggs, and also comes with trays for cooking 1 omelette or 2 poached eggs.). Incident: I was using a Dash Rapid Egg Cooker this afternoon to make hard boiled eggs. The Rapid Egg Cooker is a small appliance that plugs into the wall, but it also has a power button for turning the appliance on. I was using the product for the first time after it had been in storage for a few months, and I placed it on my kitchen counter and plugged it in while I measured water and arranged the eggs in the accompanying plastic tray. Before adding water to the product's hot plate and pressing the power button, I noticed that there was a bit of dust or debris on the hot plate's surface, and so I tried to quickly brush it off so that it wouldn't burn onto the surface. However, unbeknownst to me, the product was already switched on, even though I had not pressed the power button, and even though the hot plate was dry. I burned two fingers due to touching the hot plate; luckily, the burns appear to be minor, first-degree burns. I only noticed afterward that the Rapid Egg Cooker's indicator light was on, and found that pressing the power button did nothing: it's not possible to turn the unit off without either unplugging it or allowing it to become hot enough to automatically turn off. Upon consulting the manual, I noticed this warning: "ATTENTION: Do not unplug the unit while cooking. If you unplug the unit while cooking, it will still be turned on when you plug it back in. If the unit does not detect water on the Heating Plate, it will automatically shut off and reset itself in a few seconds." I do not know whether the hot plate had been unplugged while it
