Incident narrative

SaferProducts.gov consumer incident report 20230920-C177B-2147345118. Severity: Incident, No Injury. Product: Ubiquiti, UI, Unifi, Unifi Protect UCK-G2-PLUS (Their product page: https://store.ui.com/us/en/collections/unifi-camera-security-nvr-compact Compact UniFi Console used to run the UniFi software suite. Integrated 1TB HDD Connect and power using PoE Optional USB-C power with Quick Charge 2.0/3.0 compliant adapter only Full UniFi OS and UniFi application support [REDACTED] for instant setup Color: Gray, Aluminum Dimensions: 131.2 x 27.1 x 134.2 mm (5.2 x 1.1 x 5.3")). Incident: I noticed that my device (Ubiquiti Unifi Cloud Key Gen 2 Plus) which was equipped with an internal battery no longer provided backup power. Upon researching the situation I saw numerous reports of battery swelling with these units, so I contacted support. Support refused to do anything about it stating it was outside of the warranty period, even though I was simply requesting that they repair it for an out-of-warranty fee. Frustrated I decided to remove the battery myself and I discovered that the battery was severely swollen, double the original thickness on one cell. The heat generated by these devices exasperates the problem and sooner or later the other cell was going to swell as well. This could have caused anything from leaking electrolyte and internal damage to the device to external smoke and heat damage, up to and including a fire hazard. I have removed the defective battery and the unit is now safe, but the company refused to do anything about it and they are potentially putting people at risk. The official recommendation I got from their support team was this: "As you mentioned the possibility of a swollen battery, it's important to note that in such cases, visible signs of swelling would typically be seen on the Cloud Key itself. Since your Cloud Key is still functional, we encourage you to continue using it." The case is made of 2mm thick aluminum and is incapable of swellin
