Incident narrative

SaferProducts.gov consumer incident report 20231215-7C677-2147343430. Severity: Incident, No Injury. Product: LG LMC0975ST (0.9 cu. ft. NeoChef Countertop Microwave with Smart Inverter and EasyClean). Incident: We bought an LG NeoChef 0.9 cu. ft. microwave two years ago and it started to malfunction after around 9 months of use. We noticed that it would make popping and crackling noises when in use, and there would be smoke and a burning smell from the inside of the device. The mica sheet on the machine began to develop a burned spot and we replaced it. This did not correct the issue and soon after, the burned spot appeared again. We replaced the mica sheet once again, but this time we noticed that the magnatron, behind the sheet, had a hole melted in it. The metal on this part is quite thick, and would have to reach a high temperature to melt it. My daughter was using it and we were concerned that it was going to catch fire. We have removed the microwave from the house as it poses a significant fire hazard. We were using the microwave occasionally to reheat food. I've read many of the one and two star reviews on the LG website and many people have shared the same issue and they have included photos of the burned mica sheets as well as photos of the melted magnatron. These reviews date back to the same time that we bought our microwave and are as recent as 24 hours ago. I've included some of the more recent reviews below. [REDACTED]
