Incident narrative

SaferProducts.gov consumer incident report 20240111-17E9E-2147342837. Severity: Incident, No Injury. Matched catalog product: JBL Charge 3. Source model text: JBL Charge 3. Incident: I received this device, a JBL Charge 3 Bluetooth speaker, as a sales award from my company, [REDACTED], in 2018. It has always worked well. I used it on Saturday, 6 Jan 2024 while cleaning the basement where I ran it out of charge. On Sunday, 7 Jan 2024, I plugged the JBL Charge 3 in to charge at noon. The speaker was on the hardwood floor in my office. At about 2:00 PM my wife heard a snap and looked up to find smoke billowing out of my office. She ran in and observed fire and smoke pouring out of the speaker. Quickly, she unplugged the device and threw it out into the driveway. We opened up all windows and doors, and the smoke cleared. There was minor maring on the hard wood floor which buffed out. Thankfully we were home when this happened. I imagine if unattended, the floor would have caught fire and significanlty hurt or destroyed my home.
