Incident narrative

SaferProducts.gov consumer incident report 20240313-E0891-2147340410. Severity: Injury, First Aid Received by Non-Medical Professional. Matched catalog product: Dremel Dremel rotary tool 8050. Source model text: 8050. Incident: In 2021, I purchased a Dremel 8050 roto tool at Lowes in Destin, Florida. A prior version of this tool had been recalled in 2015. The tool was reported safe. On 3/12/2024, a worker used this tool for less than 10 minutes to touch up a 1/4x3/8x6 inch moulding piece. The 8050 was returned to its charger. After 11 last night, the unit turned itself on and began running at max speed and smoking. I happened to be asleep on boat, was awakened by noise. Flames appeared. Vessel smoke detection system activated. I carried flaming unit out of boat and tossed it into Bayou Chico in Pensacola, Florida. Minor first degree burns to right hand. Reported to marine authorities and marina.
