Incident narrative

SaferProducts.gov consumer incident report 20240810-34DB6-2147337318. Severity: No Incident, No Injury. Product: Ninga Woodfire outdoor grill Og7, series S5 (Ninga Woodfire Grill. model OG7, series S5). Incident: I bought a Ninja Woodfire grill, model numberOG7, SeriesS5, from Costco on June 17, 2024. The materials available on line describing this product say that the device requires a 15 Amp electrical circuit. I have an outlet on my deck attached to a 15 amp circuit . So I assumed the device would work on my deck. After using the device for about a month, it began to blow the circuit breaker every time I used it. Then the circuit began to blow even when the grill was not in use. Today an electrician came to my house . He determined that the device , which draws 1760 watts, is not safe to use on a 15 Amp circuit because the maximum continuous use wattage for a 15 amp circuit is 1440 watts. Additionally , he determined that the device burned the insulation off the wires in the electrical panel and destroyed the 15 amp breaker , and came very close to starting a fire. He said the device requires a dedicated 20 amp circuit to operate safely. I contacted Costco about this. Costco agreed to allow me to return the grill and get a full refund. I suspect Ninga knows that the device requires a dedicated 20 amp circuit but it also knows that very few people have a dedicated 20 amp circuit available on their decks or patios, and so it falsely claims the device can operate safely on a 15 amp circuit. The materials available to the consumer by ninja , pre- purchase, say only that a 15 amp circuit is required. )
