Incident narrative

SaferProducts.gov consumer incident report 20241007-0D4BF-2147336094. Severity: Incident, No Injury. Product: Newdery ZHX-PB22 (NEWDERY for Apple Watch Charger, 10000mAh Portable Charger Power Bank Sold by Amazon: https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B0BZTXZZ77/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_search_asin_title?ie=UTF8&psc=1). Incident: This report pertains to a product sold by Amazon in United States. It is called: "NEWDERY for Apple Watch Charger, 10000mAh Portable Charger Power Bank". It's Amazon product page is here: https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B0BZTXZZ77/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_search_asin_title?ie=UTF8&psc=1 Here is what happened. The product was bought in August, in USA where I reside. It was used sporadically in the last 2 months. We (my partner, our toddler son, and I) traveled to Uruguay on September 27, 2024, and are staying until October 10. At about 4am on October 1, while sleeping in a guest room of a family member's house, we were woken up by a crackling hissing noise emanating from this Newdery charger (power bank). It was spinning around and it was on fire -- thin tongues of flame were emanating from it. The fire resembled several firecrackers lit at once. It was emanating from the underside of the unit and was extremely hot. It took us about 10 seconds to (sort of) put the fire out, while the unit (on its own) was spinning around the floor, like a whirling dervish. Finally, I used a large pillow to extinguish the flame and then I carried (holding it between two shoes) the still glowing/hissing/crackling carcass of the unit to the kitchen sink and immersed it in water. It continued to hiss for another 4-5 seconds. It is an absolute miracle that the fire started with us being in the room. Otherwise, it would've burned down the entire house where we were staying. It is also fortunate that the floor was tiled! If it was a linoleum, carpet, or wood floor, much more damage would have been done. A
