Incident narrative

SaferProducts.gov consumer incident report 20241102-D856B-2147335579. Severity: Incident, No Injury. Product: Plus 4 Plus 4 (The Qidi Plus 4 is a fully enclosed filament type 3d printer approximately 2.5 feet in height by 16" wide by 22" deep. It has a glass door and an upper glass door to allow access to the print head from above. It has a sturdy plastic outer body surrounding a steel frame. It employs sophisticate electro-mechanical component to 3d print a wide variety of filament types.). Incident: Qidi Tech, a Chinese-based 3d printer company recently released a new model printer ( the "Plus 4") that is susceptible to catching fire. Certain types of filament require hot air around them to print properly. To accomplish this the user programs the printer turn on it's "Chamber Heater." As the air inside the printer gets warm, the electronics that control the heater fail to adequately control the electric current and the circuit board becomes hot enough to ignite. The model that I own nearly caught fire as I was overseeing it operate. I then researched the issue and found many other consumers were experiencing the same issue. There are many posts and a few youtube videos by experienced creators that attest to this issue. Qidi has known this issue well over a week now. They instructed their customers to update the firmware in an attempt to mitigate the rise in temperature but astute customers rebuked this attempt with proof that the firmware update is not sufficient to lessen the risk of fire. Hardware components must be replaced with safer ones to adequately reduce the temperature rise on the circuit board. Several consumers in the Qidi message boards have offered "fixes" to this problem by suggesting the proper components & directions to replace the faulty ones. *THIS IS A VERY RISKY PROCESS FOR THOSE UNFAMILIAR WITH WORKING ON AC CURRENT SYSTEMS!* A widespread, comprehensive recall needs to be initiated by Qidi Tech at Qidi Tech's cost.
