Incident narrative

SaferProducts.gov consumer incident report 20241120-841D5-2147335151. Severity: Injury, No First Aid or Medical Attention Received. Product: Pretihom JF-5323 (PretiHom Electric Handheld Deep Tissue Massage Gun, Fascia Gun). Incident: I had not used my massage gun in over a year, and the battery was completely discharged. I plugged it in to charge with the original charging cord. About 20 minutes later, while sitting a few feet away, I heard an extremely loud bang as the battery exploded. Smoke began pouring out of the device. I quickly unplugged it from the electrical wall outlet and opened a window. A few minutes later, while assessing the situation, there was a secondary explosion. Thick white and gray smoke filled the room, and black ashes emerged from the battery compartment of the massage gun. I retrieved a fire extinguisher and monitored the situation. Fortunately, there were no flames, and I was able to remove the massage gun from my house using gloves and placing it in a box. In hindsight, I should have called the fire department, but everything happened so quickly. It took 12 hours with all windows open and fans on to clear the chemical smoke. The incident contaminated nearby linens and left scorch marks on the table, along with black soot surrounding the area. Fortunately, I was sitting far enough away when it occurred that I was uninjured, and it was on a fire-resistant surface. If I had been holding it, I could have been seriously injured, and if it had been on a different surface, it might have resulted in a fire. Im also grateful that I was home when it happened; if it had occurred while I was away, my pets could have been at risk of chemical smoke inhalation and poisoning, in addition to the risk of a house fire. Im also relieved that I didnt try to remove it from the house after the firs
