Incident narrative

SaferProducts.gov consumer incident report 20241207-A847C-2147334782. Severity: No Incident, No Injury. Product: Masterbuilt MB20100112 (Masterbuilt Slow Smoker https://www.masterbuilt.com/products/masterbuilt-slow-smoker-1 Part #MB20100112). Incident: On May 17, 2022, I purchased a MB20070122 digital smoker and the MB20100112 cold smoker attachment. I ran into two problems last week: 1) Near the end of a six hour smoke, the slow and cold smoker appeared to get very, very hot. I'm not sure why the heating element got so hot, but it was enough to melt the switch and wiring and threw both my GFCI and the breaker in the panel. Plugging in the slow and cold smoker now throws the GFCI. Needless to say, I cannot use it anymore. 2) I went to use the original wood hopper attachment; it appears that the latch for the cold smoker actually tore into the wood chipper housing making it unusable. I contacted Masterbuilt right after this happened on 11/27. They got back to me after a week with no information. The only question was if I was using an extension cord. In fact, I was, but it is outdoor rated and of sufficient gauge so that it never got hot. My primary use of the extension cord is to keep the smoker away from the house. In short: *) What happened that made you want to report? Cold smoker caught on fire and melted on/off switch *) What type of product(s) were being used? Masterbuilt Slow Smoker https://www.masterbuilt.com/products/masterbuilt-slow-smoker-1 Part #MB20100112 *) Who was using the product(s)? Me, an adult male living in the United States *) How were the product(s) being used? A three to six hour smoke for turkey breast *) Were there any injuries that happened or may have happened while using the product? A fire could have caused more damage had the smoker been next to the house. Or had it caught on the grass under
