Incident narrative
SaferProducts.gov consumer incident report 20250313-8326F-2147332587. Severity: Incident, No Injury. Product: Titan Titan Model unknown burned (Titan Battery 18V 6.ah and Battery charger 2A for Ni-MH&Ni-CD). Incident: A Titan 18V 6.0Ah battery used with the Titan Pickleball machine was left charging on my coffee table in the livingroom. That evening, my daughter heard a hissing noise and, upon investigation, noticed that the battery and charger were glowing. She called out for the fire extinguisher, but before we could reach it, the battery continued to smoke and started sparking. My daughter grabbed a pair of sweatpants and rushed the battery and charger out of the house. As she threw it to the ground, it began to explode. My son used the fire extinguisher on it, but it continued to explode. We called the fire department, and they fully extinguished it. Had it not been for my daughter's quick actions, the house might have burned down. Most importantly, we were unaware that lithium batteries could explode and continue to do so until fully extinguished. Thankfully, my daughter was not injured while removing the battery, and only some furniture, clothing, and plants were damaged. Additionally, my asthma was triggered, and I had to stay out of the house for at least 40 minutes to air it out and use my inhaler for the next two weeks. My son, who was trying to extinguish the fire, and my daughter who handled the charger & battery, experienced throat and nose irritation for a few days.
