Incident narrative
SaferProducts.gov consumer incident report 20250313-EECF5-2147332594. Severity: Incident, No Injury. Matched catalog product: Kidde 20SD10. Incident: Recently installed fire alarms throughout our home. They were the Kidde model# 20SD10. Both units were randomly going off for no cause - after removing from the wall, Kidde stated to use "compressed air" on the unit (??) and to wait 24-hours. After failed efforts, testing was done on a 3rd unit to see if it even worked and while it was inside a smoke filled box, the alarm did not trigger - yet, it would randomly go off the same as the others. So three defective units. Company Support via their toll-free line was mostly unhelpful until the 3rd call in - at which point they agreed to send out replacements. With everything, and the fact that they DID NOT detect the smoke in a controlled test (I am not certified or licensed to test the units) it seems that there are other problems with these units and the company acted as if it was no big deal. This is why I wanted to report the matter to the governing board for full review, as it may help save a life. While no injury (other than my nerves, back, and toes from jumping and stumbling out of bed as if there were a fire) were experienced, I do feel as if the products are unsafe and can stated without a doubt that I believe the company was being dismissive to my reports.
