Incident narrative

SaferProducts.gov consumer incident report 20250522-53D9F-2147331128. Severity: Incident, No Injury. Product: Chamberlain B750 (Chamberlain B750 Belt Drive Smart Garage Door Opener). Incident: This garage door opener was installed 7 years ago and is used 2-3 times daily. The day of the event it was operating normally with no signs of malfunction. I was actually working in the garage in the vicinity of the opener for some time immediately preceding the event. I opened the garage door to go out to the car, closed it once outside, and then re-opened it needing to go back into the house. The door was left open at this time. Once inside the garage I smelled a strong acrid/chemical smell that I thought was from construction/landscape work at a neighbors home. I hurried into the house not wanting to breathe in whatever this chemical was. After 2-3 minutes at most, I opened the garage door to see if the air had cleared and found the garage door opener had ignited and was burning. I quickly shut the main breaker to the house and used a fire extinguisher to put out the fire. I first wondered if a catastrophic light bulb failure could have caused this, but the only scorched area is clearly in the vicinity of the internal control board and any melting of the light socket seems secondary. Had this occurred at any other time this would have resulted in a house fire with significant property loss and possible loss of life.
