Incident narrative

SaferProducts.gov consumer incident report 20250915-5576F-2147327814. Severity: No Incident, No Injury. Product: GE JGBS66REK4SS (Stainless steel Gas range/oven GE model JGBS66REK4SS.). Incident: While using my GE gas range (model JGBS66REK4SS, purchased new from Best Buy on November 20, 2020), the oven igniter began failing repeatedly, tripping breakers, and ultimately failed with a loud explosive pop (like a gunshot) that frightened my family and immediately cut power. GE later confirmed that the igniter inside this range is a non-OEM part not used in their factories, which means the oven was sold new with a defective, unsafe component already installed. The range was only used for normal household cooking, never serviced or altered, and children were present in the home at the time of the failure. Although no physical injuries occurred, the incident created a serious risk of electrical fire or gas ignition, and the explosive failure demonstrates that this was not a normal part failure but a hazardous defect present from the start.
