Incident narrative
SaferProducts.gov consumer incident report 20251021-ADB4E-2147326933. Severity: No Incident, No Injury. Product: Neocharge 1450 (The Smart Splitter connects to existing 240V outlet, unlocking circuit sharing between two EVs or an EV and a dryer.). Incident: I am reporting a serious overheating and potential fire hazard involving the NeoCharge Smart Splitter (NEMA 14-50 model) purchased through the SMUD rebate program. During normal operation charging one EV at 40A while an electric range is in use the NeoCharge device reaches over 150F (65C) at its plug body and terminals. When the NeoCharge is removed from the circuit, the same 40A load operates normally with no overheating. This clearly indicates that the NeoCharge unit itself causes the excessive temperature rise, likely due to high contact resistance or poor internal connection design. Sustained temperatures above 140F (60C) can cause: Softening and carbonization of insulation, Loss of spring tension in contacts, Oxidation and increased resistance, Thermal runaway and potential fire ignition. The device also heated nearby wiring and outlet contacts, which could compromise the circuit over time. NeoCharge has been notified and acknowledged the defect but has not yet provided a replacement. I am submitting thermal images and temperature data with this report to confirm the hazard. Product information: 1. Order Number [REDACTED] 2. Date of purchase Sep 14 2025 3. Customer: [REDACTED] 4.
