Incident narrative

SaferProducts.gov consumer incident report 20251120-5BA38-2147326220. Severity: Incident, No Injury. Product: Ninja AF161 (Ninja air fryers both Max and regular models). Incident: Many ninja air fryers were sold defective missing the safety feature where the machine turns off when the basket is removed. The fan continues to run with the heating element engaged where paper or other combustibles can be blown into the machine causing a fire or injury. I have now come across three different machines where I can visually guess the defect based off looking at the machine. No one knew their machine was lacking this safety feature since purchase. Every single household was either elderly or have small children. I contacted Ninja and they confirmed this is a defect and offered to replace the machine for MORE than the cost of an entirely brand new one. I believe if I can visually guess the defect, ninja was well aware of this defect and sold the dangerous units anyway and to charge more than a new machine to replace a unit which can result in injury or death due to the defect is unethical.
