Incident narrative

SaferProducts.gov consumer incident report 20251227-6A76A-2147325174. Severity: Injury, No First Aid or Medical Attention Received. Product: Rheem Model: XG40T06EN38U0 (Rheem gas water heater). Incident: I am reporting a severe safety hazard involving a Rheem gas water heater (Model: XG40T06EN38U0, purchased from Home Depot in 2023). On December 20, 2025, the unit began leaking water severely from the base. Shortly after, it completely stopped workingno hot water, and the power indicator light went out. This indicates water has caused an internal electrical failure, creating a serious risk of electric shock or fire. To prevent flooding, I had to shut off the main water supply to my house. As a result, my household (including a minor child) has had no running water for days, unable to bathe or maintain basic hygiene. The manufacturer (Rheem) has only offered an insufficient $520 voucher and refuses to provide repair service, leaving us in an unsafe and uninhabitable condition.
