Incident narrative

SaferProducts.gov consumer incident report 20260126-3B979-2147324208. Severity: No Incident, No Injury. Product: Kitchen Aid KCGC506JSS02 (Kitchen Aid 36 Commercial Style Gas Rangetop). Incident: The knobs on this Rangetop are at 36 and can easily be started by brushing on the stove as you walk by. This is a safety concern as there is no need to push in to start and there is no safety switch to deactivate the knobs. Since it is so easily accessible and there is no lock or deterrent a child could activate it. This has happened a dozen times since installation. UPDATED ON 2/12/2026: [I received a call this morning about this case number from Whirlpool. Their resolution for the front mounted knobs with no safety locks is for me to go purchase child proof covers for a brand new $3000 stove top. The youngest person in this house is 21. What about all the other units in households purchased by other unknowing consumers? The problem is with the construction and non-safety compliance of this unit. The other resolution was to send a representative to check the device to see if its working as expected after saying, the knob will activate upon being brushed starting the gas or flame. This could cause a fire or carbon monoxide poisoning. Neither of these are acceptable resolutions. Units with the propensity to release gas or cause fire should never leave the manufacturer. ]
