Incident narrative

SaferProducts.gov consumer incident report 20260225-1420B-2147323257. Severity: Incident, No Injury. Matched catalog product: Tesla Powerwall 2. Incident: While in my home I heard loud bangs from my garage, as if someone was slamming my metal roll-up garage door. I opened the door to the garage and it was filled with smoke and the acrid smell of burning electrical wiring, etc... I opened the garage door to vent the smoke and immediately the source was revealed to be my Tesla Powerwall 2 emitting smoke and with a large visible burn mark on the unit. I quickly turned it off and tripped all electrical circuit breakers. My Powerwall 2 was NOT included in their recent recall! If I had not been home, or had not been near my garage, I fear my house would have burned down. This incident is extremely distressing, as it endangered my loved ones' lives, my pets' lives, and the possible/likely destruction of my home. To say this situation is absolutely unacceptable is a massive understatement. I'm extremely concerned that many other Powerwall 2 owners (with units NOT recalled) may unknowingly be in grave danger.
