Incident narrative

SaferProducts.gov consumer incident report 20260307-58CF5-2147322890. Severity: Incident, No Injury. Product: Samsung NY58J9850WS (Samsung Dual Fuel Range NY58J9850WS). Incident: I am submitting this report to raise a serious safety concern regarding a Samsung gas range model NY58J9850WS that is approximately 10 years old. Today, one of the burner control knobs failed in a way that created a potentially dangerous situation in my home. The plastic interface inside the burner knob cracked, which prevented the knob from properly engaging the gas valve stem. As a result, when my teenage daughter attempted to turn the burner off, she was unable to do so. The gas continued to flow because the broken plastic component inside the knob could not transmit the turning motion needed to shut the valve. This failure represents a significant safety hazard. The burner control knob is a critical safety control that must reliably allow the user to shut off the gas supply. A failure that prevents the gas from being turned off could easily result in a gas leak, fire hazard, or explosion risk if the user cannot quickly stop the flow of gas. Upon further inspection, it appears that a key structural part of the knob that interfaces with the valve is made of thin plastic that cracked during normal use. A component responsible for controlling a gas valve should not fail in a way that disables the ability to turn the gas off. I also discovered that the replacement knob from Samsung costs $146.95 plus shipping. This seems excessively expensive for a small plastic component that performs a critical safety function. The high cost may discourage consumers from replacing worn or weakened knobs before they fail, which could increase the risk of dangerous situations. Given the seri
