Incident narrative

SaferProducts.gov consumer incident report 20260316-2F4B2-2147322598. Severity: Incident, No Injury. Product: Trane XV80 Model Number: TUD2C100A95VBB (Trane Gas Furnace; Model Number: TUD2C100A95VBB; Series: XV80 / Variable Speed; Heating Capacity: 100,000 BTU; Efficiency: 80% AFUE (Annual Fuel Utilization Efficiency); Configuration: Upflow / Horizontal; Fuel Type: Natural Gas; Blower Type: Variable-speed motor). Incident: I am reporting a critical safety mechanism failure on my Trane XV80 Furnace (Model: TUD2C100A95VBB / Serial Number: 19263T2TGG). On February 17, 2025, my home filled with a strong odor of natural gas, prompting an emergency response from the [REDACTED] Fire Department and [REDACTED]. The unit was "red-tagged" by responders as an immediate explosion hazard and taken out of operation. The furnace's Integrated Furnace Control (IFC) board failed to initiate a "hard lockout" after consecutive unsuccessful ignition attempts in a 24-hour period. This unit was used for its intended residential heating purpose and was professionally maintained by Service Specialties Inc. twice annually since installation in July 2019. The ignitor was replaced during a routine inspection in October 2025. However, on February 17, the ignitor failed again, and instead of shutting down the gas valve as designed, the IFC board entered a continuous ignition loop lasting nearly a full day. During each cycle, the gas valve opened and released unburned natural gas into the home. A service technician confirmed the hardware failure the following day and replaced the ignitor for a second time in four months. While no physical injuries occurred, there was a high potential for a catastrophic explosion or fire due to the accumulation of gas. This represents a life-safety failure of the primary protection meant to prevent the build up of combustible fumes.
