Incident narrative

SaferProducts.gov consumer incident report 20260326-2B1E2-2147321282. Severity: Incident, No Injury. Product: Moonybaby 55985PR (This baby monitor was purchased on Amazon from Moonybaby store and no longer seems to be available to buy. It was sold as a "Low EMF, no WiFi" baby monitor. Color is white and light blue. Dimensions are 6.25"x4"x0.5".). Incident: I experienced a failure involving a baby monitor unit that resulted in significant melting of the device housing. The monitor was not in active use at the time of the incident and had been resting on top of my laptop. When I woke up, I observed that the monitor casing had visibly melted and deformed along one side. The laptop underneath was not damaged or overheated. Upon inspection, the melting appeared localized and irregular, with bubbling and deformation concentrated along the area where the internal battery is located. After opening the device, there were no visible signs of external burning, charring, or soot on the internal components or circuit board. The pattern of damage suggests that the heat originated from within the device rather than from an external heat source. The device was not placed on a hot surface, near a heat source, or exposed to any conditions that would reasonably cause external melting. This unit was a replacement for a previously malfunctioning monitor of the same brand. Based on this incident, I am concerned about a potential internal battery or electrical failure and the associated safety risk, particularly for a product intended for use around infants. No injuries occurred, but the device exhibited clear signs of overheating and material deformation.
