Incident narrative

SaferProducts.gov consumer incident report 20260407-D2B76-2147320883. Severity: Incident, No Injury. Product: GE GF2550SSN5WW (GE front-loading washing machine (model GF2550SSN5WW, serial SZ318061N)). Incident: On April 5, 2026, around noon, the glass door of my GE front-loading washing machine (model GF2550SSN5WW, serial SZ318061N) suddenly shattered while the machine was running a normal wash cycle. The glass exploded inward into the drum, covering all of the clothing with sharp fragments. Some pieces were embedded in the clothes, and the force of the failure also caused visible damage to the metal drum. This was a dangerous failure that could have caused serious injury if anyone had been nearby or if the glass had been handled unknowingly while removing clothing. The machine was only 1 year and 1 month old, just outside the warranty period. When I looked into replacement parts, I found that the replacement door glass for this model is a very commonly purchased item, which suggests that similar failures may be occurring frequently. Because this failure involves shattering glass, potential injury, and indications of a pattern of similar part replacements, I believe this may represent a safety defect that warrants investigation.
