Incident narrative

SaferProducts.gov consumer incident report 20260415-FF114-2147320561. Severity: Incident, No Injury. Product: Schylling 21346SST, 24108SST (Schylling Head Lamp with adjustable strap and beam, 7 LEDs, requires two AA batteries not included, for children ages 6+). Incident: Within the past couple of years, I purchased two Schylling headlamps. I saved them as future gifts for my daughters. Recently, we were about to go on a family camping weekend, so I got out the headlamps (which were still sealed in their plastic packaging) to prepare to gift them to my children. I noticed they needed batteries so I went ahead and removed them from the plastic packaging, placed a brand new battery in the first headlamp, set it aside, and placed a brand new battery in the second headlamp. When I picked up the first headlamp again to take both to pack for our trip, the first headlamp was hot to the touch. I noticed the plastic over thebattery compartment looked wavy, like it was already melting. Fearing for my safety, I took it to the bathroom and covered it in a towel, so I could protect my hands and face while trying to remove the battery. One of the two batteries slid out, the other was already melting into the headlamp. I handed it off to my husband who took it outside -- as the product now reeked of burning plastic -- and was able to finally remove the melting battery. On the packaging, under the Made in China label, one of the headlamps has the number 21346SST and the other has 24108SST.I don't know which of the two was the one that burned.
