Incident narrative

SaferProducts.gov consumer incident report 20260419-6A358-2147320398. Severity: Incident, No Injury. Product: Summit Appliance BRF36FD (Undercounter Refrigerator/Freezer). Incident: The unit began exhibiting operational issues including excessive frost buildup, abnormal fan noise, and inconsistent temperature control. After noticing frost buildup, the unit was unplugged to allow it to defrost and then returned to normal operation. While the property was occupied by two guests, they returned to find that the appliance had filled the space with smoke. Upon inspection, the refrigerator had overheated to the point of melting internal components, including insulation and surrounding materials near the evaporator and fan assembly. The unit created a clear fire hazard inside an occupied 121-year-old guest house used as a short-term rental. The appliance was immediately unplugged and removed from service. No injuries occurred, but the situation presented a serious risk to occupants and property.
