Incident narrative

SaferProducts.gov consumer incident report 20260521-42D1B-2147318971. Severity: No Incident, No Injury. Product: Dell XPS 15 7590 (Gray Dell XPS 15 7590 Laptop). Incident: I purchased a Dell laptop in 2019 and experienced an issue shortly after purchase where the computer would unexpectedly power on or fail to remain asleep while stored inside a backpack or carrying case. On multiple occasions, the laptop became extremely hot while enclosed and unattended, causing concern about overheating and potential lithium battery fire risk, but luckily I caught it being on in time each time to where it didn't heat up to a point where it became a threat. At the time, I did not pursue the issue because I rarely traveled with the laptop. Recently, after traveling more frequently with the device, the same problem reoccurred. The laptop appears to wake from sleep mode or otherwise activate unexpectedly while packed away, generating significant heat in an enclosed environment with limited ventilation. This presents a potential fire and burn hazard, particularly during airline travel or while the laptop is stored in luggage, backpacks, or other confined spaces. The issue appears related to unintended wake/sleep behavior and overheating during transport. I am submitting this report because I believe the condition may pose a consumer safety risk and may affect other users of similar Dell laptop models. The risk of harm is that the laptop randomly turns on while being transported in a backpack or enclosed container. I've taken it out where it was burning hot and feels like it could cause a fire in an airplane or while transporting in other ways.
