Incident narrative

SaferProducts.gov consumer incident report 20260608-E0C7D-2147317440. Severity: No Incident, No Injury. Product: Bonavita BV382510V (Bonavita 1L Digital Variable Temperature Gooseneck Electric Kettle. Stainless steel body on a black base, with a gooseneck spout and an LED control panel offering 6 preset temperatures. Rated 120V, 60Hz, 1200W. Labeled for household use only, model BV382510V, made in PRC, date code 2515. The base label states the kettle is ETL listed and conforms to UL standard 1082 and to CSA standards. It is used at home to heat water for pour-over coffee and tea.). Incident: The product is a Bonavita 1L Digital Variable Temperature Gooseneck Electric Kettle, 1200 watt, stainless steel, model BV382510V. I purchased it through Amazon on November 25, 2025 and use it at home to heat water for coffee. In early May 2026 it developed a hazardous defect. It continues boiling after the power is switched off and cannot be stopped using its controls. The only way to make it stop heating is to unplug it from the wall outlet. The defect has worsened over time. The kettle has begun producing steam even when it contains very little water, has boiled itself dry, and on the most recent occasion I detected a smell of smoke. No injuries have occurred, but I consider this a serious fire, burn, and scald hazard. An appliance that will not stop heating and runs itself dry poses a significant risk of fire or injury, particularly if left unattended or operating overnight. I reported the defect to the product's distributor, who acknowledged the hazard in writing, advised me to discontinue use and keep the kettle unplugged, and agreed to send a replacement. Several weeks later no replacement has arrived and the company has stopped responding to my messages. I have a video demonstrating the kettle continuing to boil after being switched off, along with the full email correspondence documenting the company's acknowledgment of the hazard.
