Incident narrative

SaferProducts.gov consumer incident report 20260610-59A51-2147317242. Severity: Incident, No Injury. Product: Hamilton Beach Sure-Crisp Air Fryer Toaster Oven 31460 (Hamilton Beach Easy View XL Sure-Crisp Air Fryer Toaster Oven. Model No. 31460. Series No. B2652LC. Silver with a black front. Handle on the top right side. Large enough to cook a 12 inch pizza.). Incident: Hamilton Beach Easy View XL Sure-Crisp Air Fryer Toaster Oven Model 31460. Purchased at Walmart September 2025. This product was used by adults in a typical household kitchen setting to cook toast, frozen pizzas, other items with relatively short cooking times. It had plenty of ventilation. It always had to be set at 450 because it didn't heat and cook consistently at lower temperatures. We recently began using it to cook items that take 30-60 minutes, such as soda bread rolls, in addition to the usual items, again at 450. While previously it consistently under-heated and took longer to cook than it should, starting in May/June 2026, it began emitting a burning smell. The item didn't burn or cook faster, but there was a burning smell. I assumed something in the crumb tray had burned. That wasn't it. We assumed it was a one-off situation. On June 7, 2026, we put in an item that should cook for 15 minutes. Within 10 minutes, there was a lot of smoke in the house. We shut it off, and the burning smell was coming from the heating elements. The food was burnt to a crisp and the pan was also burnt. The smoke detector, not located near the kitchen, went off a minute later. We were lucky nothing caught on fire and no one was injured. It took a while for the smoke to clear, even with a fan. We let it cool, tested it again and even at low temps, the upper heating element turned bright bright orange, brighter orange than it had ever been before that day. We immediately unplugged it and haven't used it since and won't use it again.
