Incident narrative

SaferProducts.gov consumer incident report 20260610-5E921-2147317288. Severity: Incident, No Injury. Product: Dell Inspiron 16 Plus 7610 (A 16-inch performance laptop computer featuring a dark gray/silver aluminum chassis and a black keyboard. The device was used primarily for personal and academic engineering work.). Incident: While using a laptop computer under standard, normal operating conditions on a desk, the device suffered a sudden and catastrophic internal electrical short circuit. The hardware failure immediately caused visible electrical arcing (sparks) and vented a significant amount of thick, chemical smoke directly into an enclosed residential living space. An adult consumer was actively operating the machine when the combustion event occurred. No physical injuries occurred, but the incident created an immediate risk of indoor toxic smoke inhalation and a potential fire hazard. To mitigate any further thermal runaway or battery hazards, the chassis was subsequently opened to inspect the internal components for stability and to safely extract the solid-state storage drive. Upon opening the casing, there is no massive or obvious external scorching visible to the naked eye, meaning the critical electrical breakdown occurred at the component level or within the internal layers of the mainboard assembly. The device remains completely non-functional. The manufacturer (Dell Technologies) was formally notified of this fire and smoke safety hazard under Internal Case Number [REDACTED](Service Tag: [REDACTED]). The manufacturer explicitly refused to perform a complimentary forensic safety evaluation of the failed hardware, electing instead to treat a physical residential fire and smoke hazard as a standard, out-of-warranty, fee-based commercial repair transaction. The chassis is being held in a secure, isolated state to await regulatory inspection.
