Incident narrative
SaferProducts.gov consumer incident report 20260612-07AE5-2147316944. Severity: Incident, No Injury. Product: GE GDF530PGM4BB (GE Appliances Dishwasher GDF530PGM4BB). Incident: In the early morning hours of May 29, 2026, I was awoken by smoke alarms triggered by a fire originating from my GE dishwasher, where I discovered the kitchen filled with thick, acrid haze and water leaking from the unit. I immediately cut power via the main circuit breaker to extinguish the active electrical fire. The interior of the unit shows clear thermal damage, including soot accumulation and melting of plastic components, specifically around the heating element, lower spray arm, and diverter assembly, which has resulted in persistent, noxious chemical odors that created a hazardous living environment. I reported this to GE Appliances (Case #[REDACTED]), but after a field technician acknowledged the damage without providing safety guarantees, GE Consumer Relations informed me they do not consider this a safety issue, claiming internal temperatures remained below ignition thresholds, and offered only a "No Charge Service" or discounted replacement. I have rejected this offer because a simple parts replacement does not address the cause of this catastrophic failure, and the manufacturers refusal to conduct a forensic investigation is negligent. I am retaining the unit in its damaged state to ensure that an objective, third-party, or CPSC-led forensic analysis can be performed, as I firmly believe this unit represents a significant fire risk to other consumers and that GEs dismissal of this event warrants a formal safety investigation by the Commission.
