Incident narrative

SaferProducts.gov consumer incident report 20260617-1A1B4-2147316451. Severity: Incident, No Injury. Product: Google Pixel 6 (Google Pixel 6 smartphone, Stormy Black color variant, 128GB capacity. The device is a touchscreen cellular telephone measuring approximately 6.2 inches by 2.9 inches, featuring a distinct raised horizontal camera bar across the upper rear of the chassis). Incident: Product Identification: Google Pixel 6 Smartphone Incident Description: The device experienced a severe, catastrophic lithium-ion battery failure. The internal battery cell has severely swollen/expanded under high pressure, completely compromising the structural integrity of the device chassis and causing the rear glass of the phone to crack open under mechanical stress. The device is actively off-gassing and represents an immediate, unstable thermal event and residential fire hazard. Manufacturer Response / Consumer Safety Risk Google Support, Case ID: [REDACTED] The manufacturer was formally notified of this active fire hazard. The manufacturer acknowledged the safety risk by offering to send a specialized transit "safety kit." However, the manufacturer explicitly conditioned the removal and remediation of this hazardous product on an out-of-pocket, out-of-warranty commercial repair fee. Because a compromised, swollen lithium battery cannot be safely or legally shipped via standard commercial couriers under Department of Transportation (DOT) hazardous materials regulations without specialized handling, the manufacturers refusal to provide a no-cost safety replacement or direct disposal mitigation effectively forces the consumer to retain an active, unstable fire hazard inside a residential dwelling space. No injuries have occurred yet, but the property is at immediate risk of a thermal containment failure.
