Incident narrative

SaferProducts.gov consumer incident report 20260620-6EA25-2147316135. Severity: Incident, No Injury. Product: Holmes 32510150 (18" digital oscillating fan with remote control). Incident: I purchased this fan exactly one month ago. Today, I woke at 3am woke up and noticed a strong burning/molten plastic smell. The fan was plugged in and switched on, but the blades were no longer running. I immediately unplugged the fan and began to move it outside due to the odor. The motor area was extremely hot. It was so hot that the plastic casing had begun to melt. I believe this was a dangerous product failure. The fan appeared to remain energized even though the blades were not spinning, causing the motor area to overheat severely. If I had not woken up when I did, it would have continued to overheat and could have resulted in a house fire, injury, or worse. No fire occurred because I discovered the issue and unplugged the fan in time. However, the severity of the heat, the burning plastic smell, and the visible melting of the motor casing suggest a dangerous electrical or motor failure.
