Incident narrative

SaferProducts.gov consumer incident report 20260706-963D0-2147314350. Severity: Incident, No Injury. Product: Google Pixel 7A (The product is a Google Pixel 7a smartphone. It is a mid-range touchscreen Android mobile device. The dimensions of the standard device are approximately 6.0 inches in height, 2.9 inches in width, and 0.35 inches in depth, with a weight of roughly 6.8 ounces.). Incident: The integrated lithium-ion battery in my Google Pixel 7a smartphone experienced severe, rapid structural expansion and swelling during normal daily use by an adult consumer. The phone was handled in accordance with standard operating guidelines and was not under any unusual physical or electrical stress prior to the failure. This severe physical distortion has caused the phone's outer chassis and back panel to completely detach and split open along two full edges, turning the device into a volatile, active thermal runaway and chemical fire hazard. Furthermore, Google's corporate support infrastructure has actively mismanaged this hazardous defect, exposing me to unnecessary physical risk. When initially contacted, front-line support representatives repeatedly instructed me to power the compromised, bloated device back on to troubleshoot it. After I refused for safety reasons, a chat supervisor under [REDACTED] explicitly instructed me to store the actively expanding battery inside a sealed, plastic double-[REDACTED] bag. No physical injuries have occurred yet, and there is no property damage due to immediate emergency fire-safety and quarantine precautions taken entirely by the consumer. However, severe injuries or property destruction could have easily happened. Sealing an outgassing battery creates an airtight pressure trap that increases rupture risks, and thin plastic acts as immediate fuel for a 1,000 F chemical fire. If I had followed Google Support's instructions to power the phone back on or seal it in a plastic bag indoors, it could have caused a violent thermal ex
