Incident narrative

SaferProducts.gov consumer incident report 20260916-8B266-2147309858. Severity: Incident, No Injury. Product: Microsoft Surface Book 2 (Miicrosoft Surface Book 2). Incident: I am writing to formally report an imminent safety and fire hazard involving my Microsoft Surface Book 2. The internal lithium-ion battery has severely degraded and is now visibly bulging and expanding. The swelling is so severe that it is physically deforming the external chassis and applying intense upward pressure, visibly separating the screen/casing from the frame. This presents a serious threat of thermal runaway, chemical leakage, and potential explosion or fire. Out of extreme caution, I have powered down the device and isolated it on a non-flammable surface, as it is a severe danger to my home and personal safety. Furthermore, standard shipping regulations strictly prohibit mailing compromised, swollen lithium-ion batteries, leaving consumers stuck with a volatile device that Microsoft refuses to safely recall or mitigate without charging steep, standard out-of-warranty replacement fees. I request that the CPSC investigate this widespread battery swelling defect across Microsofts Surface product lines to hold the manufacturer accountable for a known, recurring hazard.
