Mechanical Failure

suspension, lower control arm, control arm bolt

While making a turn, one of the two bolts holding the front driver-side lower control arm sheared completely. Inspection indicated a fatigue failure likely caused by inadequate factory assembly clamping force. Without proper torque, the joint interface slipped under normal loads, redirecting cyclic shear and bending forces onto the bolt threads and shank, which led to fatigue fracture. The vehicle remained drivable but unstable after the failure. Months prior, the tire had been rubbing against the wheel well, which in hindsight was an early symptom of the improperly secured control arm. An independent mechanic confirmed the failure and replaced the control arm sub-assembly.
