SaferProducts.gov consumer incident report 20130207-D20BC-2147459013. Severity: Incident, No Injury. Product: Hewlett-Packard (HP) CT:557C65DLLQ2538 (Hewlett-Packard HP 65W Charger for a HP Pavilion dv6500t laptop.). Incident: I was using an HP dv6500t laptop when I smelled an acrid burning odor. I looked around for the smell and hearing this clicking noise. found the source was my laptop ac adapter, which I picked up to investigate. Once I picked it up, the cord began sparking and caught on fire, at which point it frayed. I immediately went to the wall and unplugged it, after which the fire went out quickly but generated a lot of smoke which I had to open a window to air out. Apparently there are a lot of customer reviews on online merchants about these power adapters or batteries overheating or in some instances catching on fire. A quick look on google also reveals some news articles in which houses have burned down due to battery fires. I believe this is extremely dangerous and anyone still using these laptops should be aware. I have replaced this adapter several times due to the cord melting, but this is the first time it actually caught on fire and I am extremely frightened from the occurrence. I looked to see if my battery or the power adapter was on the recall list but it is not. I was lucky that I was home to witness this. I hope no one gets hurt from an incident like this.
