SaferProducts.gov consumer incident report 20251207-E2B32-2147325783. Severity: Incident, No Injury. Product: Lenovo Legion 5 16IRX9 (The product is a Lenovo Legion gaming laptop. It has a 16" screen and this configuration was specifically sold by Costco. I have uploaded a picture of the detailed product label.). Incident: I was using a Lenovo Legion gaming laptop (model number Legion 5 16IRX9) while plugged in using the manufacturer supplied power cable. When I attempted to open a video game program, I heard a pop and saw a flash inside the laptop. The screen of my laptop went off and there was smoke coming out of all of the vents. I removed the power cable and rushed the laptop into the kitchen. I did not unscrew anything to open the laptop internally, but there was a significant amount of smoke, so I believe there was truly a fire in the laptop. It is completely non-functional now and I am attempting to get a warranty refund through Costco/Lenovo. No one was injured but I believe this could have caused a significant fire if the laptop was around flammable materials and not immediately unplugged. There is no visible damage to the exterior of the laptop but it smells like burnt plastic even 12 hours later.
