Government / agencyIndexed Oct 28, 2026Source-linkedVerify source — SaferProducts.gov incident

SaferProducts.gov consumer incident report 20250102-F83F7-2147334211. Severity: Incident, No Injury. Matched catalog product: Uniden SDS100. Source model text: SDS100 RADIO SCANNER. Incident: Purchased a "Uniden SDS100 radio scanner"... Factory Rechargeable battery pack expanded to nearly 3 times it size & got hot. This is clearly a dangerous battery pack as it could explode & burn a house down. I have heard that Uniden knows of the problem but they have no remedy.

SaferProducts.gov consumer incident report 20260331-3FE45-2147321119. Severity: Incident, No Injury. Matched catalog product: Uniden SDS100. Incident: I purchased a uniden sds100 handheld scanner on February 8 2025. On march 30 2026 I picked up the scanner to read and listen to a local fire call and the battery cover blew off and the battery fell out. Looking at the white smoke from the battery I put it the sink and filled it with water. This morning I put it in an ashtray on my porch. I've included photos and the sales information from Amazon. In this email. I contacted Amazon who advised me to call uniden for a replacement. However they offer no help. This battery is a serious issue after I did some research on line. It's a huge safety problem for the way this thing blew up in my hand.

Incident: The consumer has experienced several issues with this scanners lithium polymer battery. After around 14 months, the batteries either explode or break out of their case. Some batteries have caught fire, due to the heat. With this most recent incident, the scanner got up to around 120 degrees easily. The consumer immediately took it outside and placed it on the sidewalk. The battery pushed the product out approx. at the time of the incident, but later that day, the radio protruded about 2-1/2. Each lithium-ion cell had expanded. Replacement batteries can cost around $60 - $70 online and the consumer has replaced 5 of them in all. The consumer contacted the product manufacturer the first 1 or 2 times this occurred, and they provided him with a replacement battery. However, with successive incidents, hes been told he must purchase a replacement batter, which he did. There is also an online ([REDACTED] form), where numerous people have reported similar issues with these radio scanner batteries.
