Surge Suppressors or Power Strips (4083)

Government / agencyIndexed Oct 22, 2026Source-linkedVerify source — SaferProducts.gov incident

SaferProducts.gov consumer incident report 20180404-B4809-2147388806. Severity: Incident, No Injury. Matched catalog product: Supco SCM150. Incident: A surge protector that was installed on my air conditioning system approximately 3 years ago started on fire and burned the side of my house. The surge protector is made by Supco and is model number SCM150. I contacted the HVAC company who installed the unit and they said there were recalls on the product, but all I can find are warnings. One of the warnings is from UL under Release No. 16PN-10. This is not a UL listed device, but they acknowledge that the surge protector is a fire hazard. Other HVAC vendors have also sent out their own notices letting customers know that these items are fire hazards and to have them removed.

Surge Suppressors or Power Strips (4083)

Government / agencyIndexed Oct 22, 2026Source-linkedVerify source — SaferProducts.gov incident

SaferProducts.gov consumer incident report 20160417-BE2D3-2147420137. Severity: Incident, No Injury. Matched catalog product: Supco SCM150. Incident: General alarm for a possible structure fire. Enroute dispatch stated fire was an A/C unit on outside of house. T53 on scene with a two story single family frame 30x70 with a smoldering fire on the "B" side of the home and occupants outside. Occupant had already extinguished most of the fire with a garden hose. T53 did a 360 and checked for extension into the house. Power shut down by T53. When E52 arrived they pulled a 200' 1 3/4" line and started overhaul on the outside wall near the A/C unit. Light smoke conditions in house. Fire was contained to a 10' x10' area on the outside of the home. Primary and secondary search completed with ventilation of interior "opening windows". Fire under control and fire investigation completed which indicated most probable cause of incident to be a Supco SCM150 surge arrester for the air conditioning unit.

Government / agencyIndexed Oct 16, 2026Source-linkedVerify source — SaferProducts.gov incident

SaferProducts.gov consumer incident report 20190826-ED5D0-2147378059. Severity: Incident, No Injury. Product: Supco SCM150 (Black rectangle surge protector attached to an air conditioner unit outside.). Incident: While we were away, the surge protector, Supco SCM 150, connected to an air conditioner unit caught a fire. A section of the siding was burnt and the surge protector was badly damaged. At first, I thought my house was hit by lightning. After a short search through internet, I learned that the surge protector was prone to overheat and catch a fire. In fact, it was recalled by the manufacturer, Supco, this year. My air conditioners were installed in 2011 and 2014 by a local HVAC company in Powhatan, VA. Both of them have Supco SCM 150 attached. I never received any recall notice although there was a recall letter sent by Supco to the local HVAC company. I think it is the HVAC company's responsibility to inform me of the recall as we, the consumers, do not normally know what kind of surge protectors installed. In addition, Supco would not know we have the recalled product and they would not have a way to communicate with us. When I called the HVAC company, I was told that they would only replace the recalled products for those customers who have the maintenance contract with them. What about the rest of the consumers who DO NOT have the maintenance contract with them? The HVAC company personnel said that they would not know who they installed the Supco surge protector to. He admitted that the company received the recall letter. However, they did nothing to inform the customers. I even told him that they could've sent us an e-mail notification to check the model of the surge protector. He didn't seem to take any responsibilities. In the end, I was told to contact Supco directly
