Electric Ranges or Ovens (Excl Counter-top Ovens) (278)

Government / agencyIndexed Oct 22, 2026Source-linkedVerify source — SaferProducts.gov incident

SaferProducts.gov consumer incident report 20150225-D5311-2147435049. Severity: Incident, No Injury. Matched catalog product: Kenmore 790.92803015. Incident: The problem is with a Kenmore flattop electric range. We were cooking dinner and when we turned on the oven the panel behind the display started to spark a lot. We had to turn off the power to the oven to get the sparking to stop. I then opened the top part of the stove to see what happened and saw that one of the wiring harnesses had shorted out and nearly caught on fire. It was very luck that we were close when this happened or it would have started a fire. I called Sears to report the complaint and they were very unapologetic. They essentially told me that they do not care that the product is unsafe because it is out of warranty (the stove is only a little over 2 years old). This all happened around the second week in September 2014, and it took Sears over one month to come and repair the oven, which they charged me more than $300 to fix. I complained to several different Sears representatives that the cost should be covered because this was a safety issue not a warranty issue, but they said they did not agree.

SaferProducts.gov consumer incident report 20161120-79469-2147410612. Matched catalog product: Kenmore 790.92803015. Incident: We purchased a Kenmore Smoothtop range in Nov 2012. Just 2 days ago, when my husband turned on the convection oven, the range short-circuited. It caused all the lights in the house to strobe like a fun house and a Horrible arching sound generated throughout the whole house. I was upstairs and could hear it. By the time I got downstairs, my husband had the back door open, airing out the kitchen It was filled with acrid, electrical smelling smoke. The circuit breaker tripped to protect us. After the smoke cleared and we felt safe, we removed the back of the range. We saw melted wires and the plastic box that the wires ran through in the bottom of the panel was totally melted. There was also soot on the panel causing us to believe that a flame-out had occurred. Thank goodness the whole range did not catch fire. We took pictures just in case anyone needs to see them. We think this range needs to be investigated. There is no reason for this to have happened. We had not moved the range in over a year. Have any other incidents like this happened with this range?
