SaferProducts.gov consumer incident report 20200507-EE4C8-2147372470. Severity: Incident, No Injury. Matched catalog product: Maytag MDB7749SAM. Source model text: MDB7749SAM1. Incident: Dishwasher was cleaning and noone was in kitchen. Heard some noise from another rooom but didn't think anything of it. Thought was one of the kids Then kept happening and getting louder and the dog was spooked. Went into kitchen and smoke was pouring out of the closed door of the dishwasher..not from inside the applaince but the door itslef was spewing smoke and extemely hot. We turned off the electricity to the washer but it continued to smoke and house reeks of burnt plastic type smell. It could have burned the house down so we are very lucky. It is now outside while we wait for a new dishwasher to be delivered and take that away. It literally is melted shut so can't open to give you the serial number etc. It was a Maytag we purchased at Lowes...I think about 8 years ago.

SaferProducts.gov consumer incident report 20160204-5EDE8-2147422038. Severity: Incident, No Injury. Product: Maytag MDB7749SAM (Maytag MDB7749SAM Stainless Steel). Incident: Arrived home, smelled electrical burn smell. Looked around could not locate source. Brought out thermal camera noted dishwasher seemed 'hot' on control panel. Saw dishwasher was 'paused', pressed 'start'. Immediate arcing sounds and black, sooty smoke poured out of the top of the control panel into room. Yanked door open and ran downstairs to hit breaker while yelling at momma to evac kids. Used thermal camera to assess damage through material, saw was concentrated on control panel. Removed front cover, found relay to soap dispenser burned, found electrical wiring harness had overheated/melted insulation, found wiring connector to control panel charred. Removed control panel cover- 1 relay fell out some 30% consumed and burned. Arc indications on inside. Thermal fuse intact (damnit) and possible varistor next to relays appeared cracked. Unit was pulled out from under sink and put in the back yard; control electronics were saved for later analysis.
