Powertrain / transmission failure

POWER TRAIN

27 months

Government / agencyIndexed Oct 9, 2026Source-linkedVerify source — NHTSA complaint #11549862

2019 Honda Civic Si (1.5L turbo engine with 6-speed manual transmission) purchased in September 2019 at CPO with 7,000 miles — current mileage 26,638. Honda factory CPO powertrain warranty valid until 11 June 2026 or 100K miles. If the vehicle is parked in gear (either 1st or Rerverse) without applying parking brake on even the slightest grade (uphill or downhill), the vehicle will slowly creep — on a couple of occurrences, the vehicle moved more than 6 feet. This has happened on multiple occasions as I do not always remember to manually apply the parking brake. Once while waiting for a friend to pick up a prescription at a pharmacy, I actually witnessed a "ratchet" effect movement of the vehicle in the parking lot while sitting in the driver's seat. I took the vehicle to Mohawk Honda (Scotia NY) for assessment. My answer was to always set parking brake as documented in owner manual — interestingly, it states the same for vehicles with CVT (automatic) transmissions as opposed to simply putting them in Park. I have owned literally dozens of manual transmission vehicles since 1981, and I have never before experienced this. Service manager (via phone) later blamed low compression engine as incapable of holding vehicle when in gear. Call to Honda Customer Service at the time referred me back to a dealer. I decided to pursue this once again after reading of another manufacturer's recall of a car that would not hold in place while parked.

Steering failure

STEERING

24 months

Government / agencyIndexed Oct 9, 2026Source-linkedVerify source — NHTSA complaint #11424329

The power steering didn't work. There were warning messages displayed for Tire Pressure Monitor Problem, Adaptive Cruise Control Problem, Lane Keeping Assist Problem, Brake System Problem, Brake Hold System Problem, Power Steering System (EPS) Problem, Vehicle Stability Assist (VSA) Problem, Hill Start Assist Problem, Collision Mitigation System Problem, Road Departure Mitigation System Problem when turning the car on. This condition was verified by the dealer on both occurrences. First occurrence was 6/8/21. It was towed to Spreen Honda dealer in Corona, CA. According to the the first invoice dated 6/8/21 for the repair there was "Confirmed fault code for C1420 main torque sensor and sub torque sensor, C1421-14 malfunction to steering angle, confirmed multiple fault codes due to rodent damage to the steering system sub harness chewed thru replaced the steering torque sensor sub harness and calibrated the steering angle sensor, cleared fault code now OK." Same problem occurred 7/8/2021. Taken to Spreen Honda again on 7/9/21. Wire harness again replaced, steering angle sensor replaced and power steering calibration performed. I have the wire harness that was replaced. Service advisor stated this is a problem with Honda wire harnesses because the insulation on the wires is soy based. He has seen it many times, including one customer at Riverside dealer who had rodents eat his wire harness four times while he was working there. Not having operational power steering makes driving the vehicle very difficult and potentially dangerous.

STEERING,FORWARD COLLISION AVOIDANCE,LANE DEPARTURE

64 months

Government / agencyIndexed Oct 9, 2026Source-linkedVerify source — NHTSA complaint #11627171

I was driving straight going 35mph on a 2 lane rd when my steering wheel starting making a weird noise & almost was shaking. The steering wheel then locked up to the left & wouldn’t move. This caused my driver side tire to go into the curb, & at this point my steering wheel was spinning in circles & all I could do was brake. After bumping off the curb I then was thrusted back over to the right lane (due to having no steering control) where I came to a stop grazing another vehicle. My insurance performed diagnostics on the vehicle & determined the steering rack housing assembly part failed, causing the accident. There was no damage at all to the vehicle that would indicate this part was damaged as result of the incident, therefore they are calling it “pre existing damage” even though Honda did a multipoint inspection on my car 08/03/2024 (not even a whole 3 months prior) that did not mention a single steering problem. It was ultimately determined this failure is what caused the incident. Upon further research I have found millions of Civics are recalled for this issue but not my year of the vehicle. However, I have found countless stories exactly like mine with steering failure all regarding the 2019 Honda Civic. I am now without a vehicle, insurance refused to pay for the failed part, and I have reached out to Honda over 10 times trying to get in contact with someone about this to no avail. I truly was terrified for my life and feel this needs to be addressed because as previously mentioned, there are countless other 2019 Honda Civic owners with the same horrifying stories. This puts not only owners at risk but all other drivers.

Electrical system failure

ELECTRICAL SYSTEM

39 months

Government / agencyIndexed Oct 9, 2026Source-linkedVerify source — NHTSA complaint #11529908

I have noticed steering wheel stiffness/notchiness when traveling at varying road speeds. The issue is present when turning the wheel left and it takes more force than usual to return the wheel back to the normal position with audible clicks/groans heard when turning/returning the wheel to neutral. During highway driving, it takes more effort than usual to maintain the vehicle within the lane, like the car is fighting against you. I brought the car into the dealership while still in warranty and the vehicle was misdiagnosed as a sway bar coupler link issue. Having completed their repair recommendations, the issue still persisted and I brought the car back for further evaluation. The car is now out of warranty, and the dealership is stating it is an electric issue with the EPS. The way the part is engineered, the entire EPS rack must be replaced which would cost me upwards of $4200. I will be in contact with corporate Honda in regards to this, as the issue was brought to their attention while the car was under warranty, misdiagnosed, and now I am expected to pay out of pocket for the repair out of warranty. This issue has only gotten worse as time progressed and I am becoming increasingly concerned about my safety and anyone who drives my vehicle due to a manufacturer defect. Research online through the NHTSA website as well as other Honda Civic Forums show hundreds, if not thousands of other Civic owners experiencing the same issue I am and being expected to pay out of pocket for this manufacturer defect. I urge the NHTSA to take action and demand Honda to recall this product as it clearly stems from an engineering fault, not the consumer, and poses a massive safety risk to anyone driving a 2016-2021 Honda Civic.

On [XXX], I purchased a 2019 Honda Civic Si (VIN: [XXX] ) from Zeigler Toyota of Racine (WI). At the time of sale, the dealership concealed critical safety-related information, including three major prior damage events (roof, front, rear), multiple Illinois auction sales, and pre-installed aftermarket suspension modifications that prevented proper rear alignment. No disclosures were made. After purchase, I was referred to Zeigler Honda of Racine, where a certified Honda technician confirmed the vehicle could not be aligned due to these undisclosed modifications, and would soon become unsafe to drive. Improper rear alignment creates risks of unpredictable handling, tire failure, and catastrophic loss of control. Zeigler Honda attempted to discreetly order parts without warranty company knowledge and failed to document inspection results or service records, indicating concealment efforts. Zeigler Auto Group operates 84 franchises across 41 locations in Wisconsin, Illinois, Indiana, and Michigan, and reports annual sales exceeding $2.2 billion. Given their size and multi-state operations, systemic concealment of structural and mechanical safety defects by affiliated dealerships poses a significant public safety threat across state lines. I have submitted complaints to the Wisconsin Department of Justice, DATCP, WisDOT, FTC, BBB, Honda Corporate, and the Illinois Attorney General. Given the severity of the defects, concealment, and Zeigler’s multi-state reach, I respectfully request NHTSA investigate Zeigler Auto Group for patterns of selling unsafe vehicles without proper disclosure. Supporting documentation is available upon request. INFORMATION REDACTED PURSUANT TO THE FREEDOM OF INFORMATION ACT (FOIA), 5 U.S.C. 552(B)(6)

Government / agencyIndexed Oct 9, 2026Source-linkedVerify source — NHTSA complaint #11541402

On Sunday morning, 8/27/2023, I entered my car after having driven it an hour prior for around 30 minutes to and from a sandwich shop. I entered the vehicle and turned the engine on without issue, and attempted to accelerate. After making it about ten feet, the acceleration on the gas pedal suddenly stopped working. I would push the gas pedal and the car would not move, nor the engine even rev. Confused, I parked and turned the car off and on again. Upon turning the car on, the engine stalled for a brief moment before slowly engaging. It was at that moment that I felt the entire car shifting back and forth, shaking. I immediately shut the car off out of fear and waited for a few moments before making a second attempt, being met with the exact same result. The next day, I entered the vehicle and attempted to turn it on again. This time, it started up and the engine engaged without any issue. However, I was now bombarded by dozens of error messages on my dashboard with systems such as emergency break, ABS, power steering, etc. giving me warnings. This morning, I had a mechanic come out and attempt diagnose the issue. He was confused when running the diagnostic tool through the systems, as he received "permanent codes" regarding several issues with the car. Taking some time to research, his opinion was that there may be an issue with the fuel pump motor. There is an open recall on 2019 Honda Civics for the fuel pump, however my specific vehicle does not seem to show up as needing this fix when I search with my VIN. After taking some time to check things, the Mechanic and myself proceeded to test drive and ensure that the car seemed safe to operate, where the mechanic approved my vehicle and encouraged me to send a report.

On December 20, I bought the car, Honda Civic type r 2019 red. Approximately the day I bought it, I noticed that when I put the second change to a strange noise, I told the seller [xxx] and he told me that maybe it is me who is throwing the wrong changes. Time passes and I keep going more often I call America Honda the following month, which was in January about 3 weeks after buying the vehicle and I tell them that I am having problems with the transmission that every time I put the second change it makes me an strange noise, all the information is pointed out, the case number they give me is # [xxx] and in that case number is all the information previously mentioned. When I make the first change of oil and filter of the auto I communicate what of said failure and they tell me the car is well maybe they are theirs. On March 24 I noticed that when I put the car in second place the change after several days took the car to the dealer yesterday March 25, 2019 and today March 26 the manager calls me if he authorized it to lower the transmission since the codes that the car gave him did not say anything accurate and the technician tells him that there May have been a bad handling or a bad change and there is the communication to the service manager [xxx] the car is new and since he bought it had a failure of transmission so mismanagement can not be and he tells me that the technician confirm that there was a mishandling or Honda guarantee or the extended that I put additional to the car would cover the damage and at that time I communicate from the beginning communicate problems of transmission. Airbag / restraint failure

AIR BAGS

12 months

Government / agencyIndexed Oct 9, 2026Source-linkedVerify source — NHTSA complaint #11328347

I was driving down a road (with my friend in the passenger seat next to me just to note) that is being repaved and it's not anything that I haven't driven on before, just a little tiny bit shaky here and there but again nothing crazy. I'm going about 10-15 MPH and all of the sudden my airbags just go off. Nothing hit, no pothole in sight, just slowly driving down the road and bam. I was spooked as I couldn't brace for it at all because I wasn't expecting it. My windows were up so the sound of it coming out basically wrecked my ears and it came out along with a bunch of smoke. I put the car in park and got out to look, confused as to what had triggered it but nothing, no damage to the car at all, nothing hit. At Honda they were not having it. They told me that they can replace it under warranty if it was proved to be a defect. I argued that it must be considering I didn't hit anything and was driving slow and there is absolutely no damage on the car. She said they'll lift it and if there is anything on the bottom of the car to indicate that the sensor was touched, it's instantly out of warranty and I need to go through insurance. How is this okay? Clearly this is some defect with the car and I'm being penalized for it. They called today for the result and said the car hit the ground and damaged the sensor so it's on me to pay for damages. I find that hard to believe because I felt no impact and was able to continue driving the car after it happened. I put it in park right away to come out but once I was told by the police to go to Honda I put the car into drive and smoothly drove off to the dealership. What can I do to have Honda accept their responsibility? I never thought that regular driving on a slightly bumpy road (basically flat and pebbly) means that the airbags would go off. There were many cars on that road yet their airbags didn't go off. *Tr

SERVICE BRAKES

Government / agencyIndexed Oct 9, 2026Source-linkedVerify source — NHTSA complaint #11310942

I own a 6 speed manual Sport coupe purchased on 5/30/19. On 2/10/20 I was stopped at a light on a slight downhill 15- 20' behind car in front. Shift was in neutral with my foot on brake pedal. After a while, my car started moving forward. I pushed harder on the brake pedeal but no response and coasted into rear of car. One person in each car and nobody injured. Fearful that brake failure would occur again, had car towed to local Honda dealer where purchased. Receipt to me indicted they did diagnostic testing, inspected brake system and test drove car. "Advised customer no problems at the moment". As noted before testing, since no manufacturer defects found was charged $139.95. On 2/11, received call from mgr. Of Honda svc. Dept. Due to my negative survey responses. Told him I was not satisfied with answer by employee to my question of why forward collision mitigation/fcm did not brake when getting close to car. Mgr. Stated that fcm is designed not to work when car in neutral or reverse. I consider lack of fcm in neutral to be a serious safety design flaw. Mgr. Then recommended that I open case with Honda customer relations which done on 2/14. Rep. Took down my info. And asked what I wanted from Honda. I said they need to determine why the brake failure happened and what can be done so I have confidence that it will never occur again. She then gave me a case # and stated that it would need to be referred to the "level 1" dept. Handling accidents/injuries/fatalities. Received a call from "level 1" on 2/17 but was told there was nothing they could do/was a local dealer issue and he was to contact the mgr. Of the local Honda svc. Dept. I sent voice/e-mails to mgr. Of local Honda svc. Dept. On 2/21 noting my experience with cust. Relations/"level 1", and asking what are the next steps -- awaiting response. I am currently driving the car in fear/on Edge. *Ln *as

Subject: Formal Complaint - Premature AC Evaporator Failure in 2019 Honda Civic Vehicles National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) 1200 New Jersey Avenue SE Washington, DC 20590 Dear NHTSA, I am writing to file a formal complaint regarding the premature failure of the air conditioning (A/C) evaporator in my 2019 Honda Civic EX. The substantial repair cost, exceeding $2,100, leaves me deeply concerned about a potentially widespread defect within this model's A/C system. My dealership informed me that other crucial A/C components, such as the condenser and compressor, are covered by an extended 10-year warranty. However, the evaporator, is not. This disparity in coverage seems unjustified, given the significant number of similar complaints I have found online. A discussion thread [XXX] {Honda forum} ) features numerous Honda owners reporting evaporator failures, with a Honda mechanic's post highlighting the issue's frequency. I purchased this vehicle with the expectation of Honda's renowned reliability. I face significant financial hardship within a year of purchase. A previous substantial engine wiring repair further burdened my situation, even leading to my full coverage insurance being dropped. Now, facing the steep cost of the evaporator repair, I am left with expensive liability-only insurance. Based on my experience, the widespread online reports, and the extended warranties on other A/C components, I have strong reason to believe that this model's A/C system is inherently faulty. I urge the NHTSA to investigate this issue and consider the potential need for a recall or extended warranty coverage for the A/C evaporator to protect other Honda owners from similar unexpected expenses. I have attached the repair estimate for your reference. Thank you for your attention and dedication to vehicle safety. Sincerely, [XXX] [XXX] [XXX] INFORMATION REDACTED PURSUANT TO THE FREEDOM OF INFORMATION ACT (FOIA), 5 U.S.C. 552(B)(6)

Engine failure

UNKNOWN OR OTHER,ENGINE,FUEL/PROPULSION SYSTEM

56 months

Government / agencyIndexed Oct 9, 2026Source-linkedVerify source — NHTSA complaint #11571523

I received a notice from Honda dated "February 2024." The notice states that "the fuel pump module may have an improperly molded impeller. Over time the impeller can deform and cause the fuel pump to become inoperable . . . an inoperable fuel pump could prevent an engine from starting, cause a vehicle to lose drive power, or stall while driving, increasing the risk of a crash or injury." Honda acknowledges the fact that there COULD be an issue with certain of their vehicles, but later states that "[t]he replacement parts needed to repair your vehicle are not currently available but are expected to become available in the fall of 2024." Knowing that Honda wants me to drive a possibly defective vehicle for at least 6 more months while KNOWINGLY allowing me to do so with the "increas[ed] . . . risk of a crash or injury," is extremely concerning. I contacted American Honda Motor Co., Inc. customer service and the representative informed me that she has "made a case" for me and that, "if anything happens, just bring it to a dealer." She could not provide me adequate answers to my follow-up questions. Specifically, I am concerned that, if it does happen, why bring it to a dealer? Honda has explicitly stated in their recall notice that the "parts needed to repair [my] vehicle are not currently available." Additionally, suppose, as Honda cautions, the "risk of a crash or injury" occurs and I do not have the opportunity to make it to a dealership? I, any passengers, or any other driver on the road, Honda operator or not, could become deceased as a result of an "inoperable fuel pump." I also drive a Kia Stinger and, as your agency might be aware, this issue was front and center with Kia a few months ago. Unfortunately, my Stinger fell victim and thankfully, I was in my driveway when it occurred. I am not comfortable driving this 2019 Honda Civic given this information and my past experience. This behavior and "notice" from Honda is evidence of their negligence.
