Snow Throwers, Blowers (1406)

Government / agencyIndexed Oct 28, 2026Source-linkedVerify source — SaferProducts.gov incident

SaferProducts.gov consumer incident report 20160123-80431-2147424400. Severity: Incident, No Injury. Matched catalog product: Toro Toro Rake and Vac model 51585. Incident: Purchased Toro 724 snow thrower, early 2016. On first startup, it leaked gas on rear of engine. Toro told me it was not normal, but told my repairman (the dealer) it WAS normal. Dealer then called engine mfg. and, over time, received three carburetors which did not provide a fix, and then received a replacement engine, which also leaked gas. Finally, early January 2016, Toro sent a replacement blower, which was started during first seasonal snowstorm January 22, and began to leak gas in such quantities that it emptied the fuel reservoir. This means three different engines for this machine leaked gas. Bear in mind that during a storm, freezing weather, blowing snow, a consumer might very well not notice a leak, and the problem never bee recorded. The blower is a potential bomb, and should be recalled.

Source model text: 51619. Incident: I was using our Toro Ultra Electric Blower, model 51619 today, when I noted a major decrease in blower speed (I had NOT moved the speed control) and felt a small burn on my right arm. Just after that, I noted smoke coming from the male electrical connector at the end of the power cord tailpiece. I immediately stopped using the blower and came into the house to contact Toro via phone. The Toro agent with whom I spoke directed me to a nearby repair center, which I called and was told that there would be an almost $40.00 charge just to initially examine the unit.

Incident: 22 inch Toro Recycler, with kohler engine. Large fuel leak at the fuel tank cap. This occurs anytime the mower is tilted, i.e. when mowing up hill or when changing direction. Because this happens while the engine is running, this creates a potentially hazardous situation, especially in dry conditions. This topic is already reported by another consumer on the saferproducts.gov website, however, a simple internet search will show that these are not the only two reports of such cases involving this same mower and engine.

Incident: I have had two Toro brand electric leaf blowers overheat at the extension cord connection to the point where the broad prong of the plug gets so hot it melts into the extension cord. In both cases I was using the proper recommended gauge of extension cord (14 gauge, 100'), was using the blowers for less than 5 minutes of continuous use and 10 minutes in total, and was using their cord lock system to keep the extension cord secure. I believe there is a defect in Toro leaf blowers that creates an unsafe electrical arc or something even when the blower is properly plugged in. This could cause a fire. In my opinion the blowers with this malfunction should be recalled.

And was leaking fuel all over the air filter ... at the bottom of the air filter discovered is a slot guess gas is suppose to run off here. My concern is at the 2nd lower part of air filter is the carburetor. if that carburetor ever sparked it could cause a fire. not to mention leaking grass is not good. naturally on a hill with mower on side leaks more gas through this valve. I FEEL THERE SHOULD BE A EITHER A RECALL OR INSTR5UCTED TO GO BACK TO THE 290 CC ENGINE THAT DIDN'T HAVE THIS ISSUE. I FEEL NOT ONLY UNSAFE But feel there should be warnings all over the machine. I went to home depot and this is the same on all the 163 briggs straton engines

Incident: This report is regarding a Toro leaf blower which caught fire without any human interaction with it for the previous 36 hours. The fire was spontaneous. I had bought this leafblower in September 2014 from Lowe's. The fire occurred on October 13, 2015. So the blower was relatively new. Early on October 12, 2015 I used the blower to clear off my back patio and walkways. They are concrete. As it was Fall with continuing leaves falling, I left the blower plugged in and sitting on its coiled extension cord on the concrete walkway, underneath a nearby redwood tree. Weather was clear and warm for those and following days. About 30 hours later I was away from home when a neighbor called me to tell me that there was "a large fire" underway in my back yard and that I should get there immediately. When I returned, two neighbors had broken the gate to my yard to gain access and had extinguished two fires with a garden hose. One was the blower itself, the other was in the redwood tree above. They were alerted to the fire in my back yard by a pillar of dense, black smoke about 50 feet high. Damaged were the blower, its extension cord, the concrete walkway, the adjoining railroad tie wall and the overhanging redwood tree. The blower was a pile of burned plastic surrounding the metal of the blower motor, with the protruding nozzle not fully burned. The redwood tree had several lower branches wholly burned; the fire had been spreading upward into the tree and its two neighbors before the fire was extinguished. I phoned Toro to report the fire. They were responsive, having a "Senior Paralega
