Government / agencyIndexed Oct 22, 2026Source-linkedVerify source — SaferProducts.gov incident

SaferProducts.gov consumer incident report 20170712-855F9-2147399043. Severity: Incident, No Injury. Matched catalog product: GE GE ProfileTM Series 1.1 Cu. Ft. Countertop Microwa. Source model text: GE Profile. Incident: During regular use of our GE Profile dishwasher, after completing a "normal" cycle without the use of the "heated dry" feature, the washer heated up hot enough to melt many plastic items within. The plastic dripped onto the heating element and filled our house with toxic smoke. The next day the washer door was inadvertently closed (no cycle running) and it began to heat up again, creating more fumes. We had to turn off the breaker to get the heating to stop.

SaferProducts.gov consumer incident report 20140417-CAF0E-2147445352. Matched catalog product: GE GE ProfileTM Series 1.1 Cu. Ft. Countertop Microwa. Source model text: profile. Incident: The oven had a loud bang and a fire while baking a pie. The fire went out quick as the door was closed. We noticed after cool down that a 2 inch by 1/8 inch burn through the metal surround around the fan. This is a convection oven named the Profile by General Electric. Our email to GE has not been answered. We seek no refund as the range/oven is 10 years old. We do not believe an oven should cause a fire or burn through metal.

Microwave Ovens (264)

Government / agencyIndexed Oct 18, 2026Source-linkedVerify source — SaferProducts.gov incident

SaferProducts.gov consumer incident report 20260429-EA538-2147319958. Severity: Incident, No Injury. Product: GE GE ProfileTM Series 1.1 Cu. Ft. Countertop Microwa (This is a GE Profile microwave in their Spacemaker line. It is a smaller size designed for compact spaces. It is marketed as an countertop unit, but is approved for built-in (hanging or undercounter) installation using manufacturer provided trim kits. It is a stainless steel finish, dimensions are 24 x 12-1/8 x 12-7/8. The SKU is PEM31SFSS.). Incident: A GE Profile PEM31SFSS microwave failed in a way that could have caused a fire if I was not home to cut off the circuit breaker when the failure happened. The microwave is less than 5 years old and was installed undercounter in a wood cabinet. The model is approved by the manufacturer for built-in installation and was using the manufacturer provided trim kit. The microwave was not in use at the time of the incident. The display went out, the control panel and lights were not responsive and the unit was making a buzzing sound heard similar to the sound when the microwave is running and the magnetron is engaged. The unit, the cabinet and the counters were very hot to the touch. The thermal cut-off did not seem to have engaged as the unit continued buzzing.
