What is likely to go wrong, when it happens, and how expensive it can be — from source-linked failure reports. Counts are reports in our database, not a population failure rate.

Reliability signal

—

12 confirmed failure reports · Early signal · Data confidence: Low

Early signal (12 confirmed reports) suggests shorter ownership before failure (typical 17 mo), but that is not enough data for a D or F grade.

SaferProducts.gov consumer incident report 20151113-E64A8-2147426711. Severity: Incident, No Injury. Matched catalog product: Kidde Model 30CUA10. Source model text: RF-SM-DC. Incident: A pan was left on the stove too long, & the contents started smoking. A significant amount of smoke accumulated in the kitchen area. I have a Kidde model RF-SM-DC smoke detector in the kitchen area. It was surrounded by a significant amount of smoke, but did not sound an alarm during the entire time the smoke was in the area. The smoke detector's status light indicated that it was working properly. After the smoke cleared, I pressed the test button, and it sounded an alarm and tested as if worked properly.

SaferProducts.gov consumer incident report 20180203-030C7-2147393160. Matched catalog product: Kidde Model 30CUA10. Incident: I did everything needed to have one of my extinguishers replaced through the recall. Unfortunately, the replacement unit I was sent was damaged before I received it. All of my attempts via phone and email to contact Kidde to remedy the situation have gone unanswered. I am concerned that I now have two unsafe fire extinguishers, and I don't know how to proceed. Please advise.

Battery failure

Fire or Smoke Alarms (702)

Government / agencyIndexed Oct 28, 2026Source-linkedVerify source — SaferProducts.gov incident

SaferProducts.gov consumer incident report 20170419-BD4C3-2147404235. Severity: Incident, No Injury. Matched catalog product: Kidde Model 30CUA10. Source model text: KN-COSM-IB. Incident: We are a federally funded housing authority using a Kidde safety product, a combination detector model # KN-COSM-IB which has been recalled by the manufacturer. On April 11 one of our tenants informed maintenance of a low battery indication in their apartment, maintenance staff changed out the battery and assumed everything was back to normal. As the day progressed we received many more instances of the low battery indication so maintenance supervisor called the Kidde support line to see what may be happening and was informed of a recall on this model detector. Housing authority staff changed out all detectors of this model after realizing that upon changing out the battery and resetting detector it rendered it no longer function able. Kidde is offering replacement of the detectors discounted at 50%. Due to the safety of our residents and property we could not leave the non functioning detectors so we began replacement immediately. We have replaced approximately 80 detectors to date and have associated costs of $3,200. We do not need to purchase any more detectors since we have already had to replace, so the discounted alarms they are offering are essentially useless. I would like to see Kidde offer reimbursement for the expenses of the replacement detectors. I feel they are not realizing the seriousness of this problem and are not backing the product recall.

SaferProducts.gov consumer incident report 20170413-3F982-2147404422. Matched catalog product: Kidde Model 30CUA10. Source model text: 3lb fire extinguisher. Incident: On April 12, 2017, 2350hrs, there was a kitchen fire I investigated. The occupant of the residence attempted to use a Kidde 3lb disposable fire extinguisher and it failed to operate. The date stamp on the base of the extinguisher was "2015" The extinguisher was rated for ABC type fires and contained a number on the label of "A99014677". This model extinguisher appears to be the same type of a recall previously issued on extinguishers made up to 2014. I attempted to use the extinguisher to see if I could get it to operate and I was unable to squeeze the handle to activate the extinguisher. The pin had been pulled. I obtained photos of the extinguisher and it is currently being safeguarded by the property owner. As a result of the inoperability of the extinguisher, an occupant of the residence used water to attempt to extinguish a cooking oil fire and as a result spread the fire.

Closed door, got fire extinguisher, opened door to put out flames, top broke off extinguisher, closed door. Went to garage to get better fire extinguisher, put out flames. Pulled out stove from wall, pulled cord. Coils never shut off! Bought new stove next day!! No real damage to house of kitchen, little smoke is all.

Incident: The department responded to a report of an outside fire at a retail grocery store. The Ambulance was the first unit to arrive and found bailed waste cardboard on fire against the exterior of the store. The staff on the Ambulance deployed the fire extinguisher from the Ambulance in an attempt to extinguish, if not at least slow the fire until the arrivial of the Engine Co. The firefighter pilled the pin, removed the hose and squeezed the handle. After some what of a brief delay the the powder "dribbled" out the end of the hose. She looked at the gauge which was still showing in the green. She again squeezed the handle and the agent slowly left the hose. She attempted to shake the hose towards the flames to get any powder to be useful. By this time the Engine Co. arrived and intiated suppresion, ultimately mitigating the incident. Our concern is we use extinguishers fairly often, obviously more than the general public. We inspect them frequently and store them in proper brackets, out of the weather. This situation ended without injury or major property damnage but easily could have ended differently should it occurred in a structure or confined space, or trapped occuopants.

Combination Fire/Smoke Alarm and Carbon Monoxide Detector (714)

10 months

Government / agencyIndexed Oct 16, 2026Source-linkedVerify source — SaferProducts.gov incident

SaferProducts.gov consumer incident report 20260813-CD76F-2147312472. Severity: Incident, No Injury. Product: Kidde Model 30CUA10 (Kidde 10-year Battery and Hardwired Smoke and Carbon Monoxide Detectors, Interconnectable, Model 30CUA10). Incident: On June 8, 2026, at approximately 9 p.m., all four Kidde Model 30CUA10 hardwired combination smoke and carbon monoxide alarms (manufacturing date March 12, 2025) installed at my residence in [REDACTED] activated simultaneously, emitting continuous alerts. My wife, who was alone in the residence, was unable to silence the units and was forced to physically remove all four from the walls. There was no fire, no smoke, and no carbon monoxide present. On June 12, 2026, a [REDACTED] technician inspected all appliances capable of emitting CO and confirmed no carbon monoxide leak. The four units were purchased on October 15, 2025 at The Home Depot, [REDACTED], Auburn, CA 95603 for $270.15 and were professionally installed and hardwired on October 16, 2025. The simultaneous activation of all four units in the absence of any hazard is consistent with an internal sensor or firmware defect. I am aware of a March 20, 2026 [REDACTED] complaint involving six Kidde Model 30CUA10-V units from a July 19, 2024 manufacturing batch, in which 50% suffered hardware failure with identical false alarm behavior. Kidde acknowledged that defect in its [REDACTED] response. I sent a written demand letter to Kidde at Kidde.Product.Support@carrier.com on June 18, 2026. Kidde failed to respond within the 14-day response deadline stated in my letter, and has not responded at all as of the date of this complaint.
