Incident: I have a Rheem Performance Platinum 50gal water heater that caught on fire due to a control panel overheating. My wife and I noticed a smell of burning electrical wires and noticed smoke coming from inside the water heater. We turned off the breaker and began looking online for a local Rheem repair company. As i typed Rheem into the search a Rheem page popped up talking about recalling these units because of control panels overheating and in some cases starting fires. We feel extremely lucky that we were home to catch it in the act and take care of it. Calling Rheem tomorrow in hopes of a speedy remedy.

RHEEM hot water heater was not operating due to no electricity. On the top of the unit, I noticed a black burn mark that appears to have come from inside the unit exactly where the electricity line goes into the top of the unit. Obviously burning or high enough heat caused a blackened burn mark. I was not notified of a +++RECALL++++, which I have now discovered took place, and I am highly concerned that the unit could have caused a fire in my home. I want it fixed and certified or replaced.
