Nonmetal Cookware (Nonelectric) (461)

Government / agencyIndexed Oct 22, 2026Source-linkedVerify source — SaferProducts.gov incident

SaferProducts.gov consumer incident report 20120720-AF92F-2147465533. Severity: Incident, No Injury. Matched catalog product: Anchor Hocking Anchor Hocking 1-cup Glass Measuring Cup. Incident: On Wednesday, July 18th, I was baking pork chops in a Anchor Hocking Glass Baking Dish. I had lined the dish with aluminum foil for easier clean up. My husand removed the dish from the oven and placed in on the cooktop, which was not turned on, to put a meat thermometer in to check the temp. As he stood there waiting for the temp to read, we heard a pop and the glass dish exploded everywhere. It went all over the counter top and all the way across the kitchen floor. It is amazing he was not cut. I have a picture of the broken dish.

Incident: My 1-cup glass measurer exploded in the sink with no exposure to any sudden temperature changes (nor is any other glass thing that I own) and no knocking or bumping up against anything. I had used it 4-5 hours earlier when making cookies to measure out the oil needed, placed it in the sink, put cool water in it to soak, and left it alone. I have no idea what caused it to shatter like it did. I'm just glad that no one in my house got hurt.

SaferProducts.gov consumer incident report 20220111-84990-2147358050. Severity: Incident, No Injury. Matched catalog product: Anchor Hocking Anchor Hocking 1-cup Glass Measuring Cup. Incident: I placed an Anchor Hocking glass baking dish in the oven with 6 rolls to bake at 350 for 13 minutes. At around 12 minutes I peeked in the oven to see if they had browned yet, they had not so i closed the door and decided to wait until the 13 min mark about 2 minutes later I heard a loud sound from the oven and to my complete horror when I opened the oven door there were pieces of glass everywhere and still making sounds so i closed the door quickly and turned the oven off. If i had opened the oven door to check on the doneness of the rolls as it exploded, i can only imagine what could have happened, as i am a nurse and have seen a lot. This could have not only blinded me but also burned and possibly could have killed me in the case a shard had penetrated my carotid which is not out of the realm of posssibilities and if i had been taking it out and holding it something fatal could have happened and to my utter dismay find almost 17-18 pages on this site with complaints about the same Anchor Hocking glass baking dish that states that it is made for baking and sold as such. I am so lucky to not have been seriously injured or blinded or disfigured or burned. This is beyond my comprehension.

SaferProducts.gov consumer incident report 20111030-74F16-2147473796. Severity: Injury, Seen by Medical Professional. Matched catalog product: Anchor Hocking Anchor Hocking 1-cup Glass Measuring Cup. Incident: I partially fried chicken thighs before attending parent/teacher conferences and I placed the pra-cooked chicken in a glass Anchor Hocking baking dish. I was gone for approx 1 hour and 45 mins. Upon returning home, I preheated the oven to 300 degrees and started to prepare the side dishes. Once the oven beeped to indicate that it was heated, I put the dish of chicken in the oven. After about 20 mins I reached into the oven, grabbed the dish and began to pull it from the oven. As I lifted the dish off of the oven rack, it exploded. I turned my face to avoid injury but I was hit in the chin and mouth with flying glass. My upper lip was cut and my lower lip and chin are burned. I went to urgent care and was given a Rx for antibiotics and burn cream and received a tetanus shot.

SaferProducts.gov consumer incident report 20110927-9B060-2147474926. Matched catalog product: Anchor Hocking Anchor Hocking 1-cup Glass Measuring Cup. Source model text: Anchor Hocking 9.5 inch Premium Grip Glass Pie Plate 91512. Incident: I reported the first exploding pie plate to Anchor Hocking about three years ago. I was using the pie plate for the first time for Thanksgiving Dinner. After removing the pie from the oven and letting it cool on a wire rack, my sister was moving the pie plate to a table for serving. Before she could set it down, it exploded all over the table. Glass was everywhere, including in the mouths of my curious two 4 month old miniature poodles. Other than worrying about glass in the food, my main concern at that time was to let Anchor Hocking know that there was a problem in the hope that it wouldn't happen to others. Anchor Hocking kindly forwarded me a replacement pie plate and a set of very nice drinking glasses after that report. At that time I assumed that this explosion was a fluke or manufacturing flaw. I haven't thought much about it since.

SaferProducts.gov consumer incident report 20151218-F901D-2147425731. Matched catalog product: Anchor Hocking Anchor Hocking 1-cup Glass Measuring Cup. Incident: On December 17, 2015, while washing my 1-cup glass Anchor Hocking measuring cup, it suddenly EXPLODED in my hands for no apparent reason. Shards of glass flew over 8 feet across the room, as well as under the living room sofa, on the kitchen cabinets, kitchen floor, sink and, worst of all, down my garbage disposal! Thank goodness I was wearing a pair of thin latex gloves or my hands would have been severely injured. Even with the gloves on, there were a couple of small abrasions on my hand. Thank goodness, I was wearing my eyeglasses or Im sure my face would have been injured. The cup had been sitting on the counter for at least half an hour after I used it to pour milk and I did not hit it anywhere on the sink while I was washing it. I was able to get the large shards of glass out of the garbage disposal using kitchen tongs and a flashlight, but the disposal would not work afterwards. Therefore, after a $79 service call to the plumber, who had to totally remove the disposal to clear the glass and reinstall it, it is now working. I still am finding pulverized glass debris in the kitchen and dining areas even after thoroughly cleaning those areas.

SaferProducts.gov consumer incident report 20130222-7E590-2147458552. Severity: Incident, No Injury. Matched catalog product: Anchor Hocking Anchor Hocking 1-cup Glass Measuring Cup. Incident: I was using my Anchor Hocking 4 cup glass measuring cup to warm a mixture of sugar & water. I placed the measuring cup in the microwave for 33 seconds. I took it out of the microwave after the 33 seconds & placed the AH glass measuring cup on my countertop & as I was stirring the sugar water mixture I heard a loud crack noise. I bent down to inspect the glass measuring cup but didn't see any cracks. I continued to stir my mixture & then the whole glass measuring cup exploded. Glass flew everywhere in my kitchen as did the mixture I was stirring. I don't understand why this happened since it was only in the microwave for 33 seconds. Thank God that it didn't explode when I bent down & got really close up to the glass measuring cup because I would be blind right now. The shards of glass would have taken my eyes out.

SaferProducts.gov consumer incident report 20140123-5F93C-2147447918. Severity: Incident, No Injury. Matched catalog product: Anchor Hocking Anchor Hocking 1-cup Glass Measuring Cup. Incident: a glass measuring cup received this Christmas made by Anchor Hocking, used maybe 6 times , exploded into pieces while inside a closed kitchen cabinet. My husband and I heard a loud "explosion" come from the kitchen on Monday evening, Jan.20th. We wentintokitchen and started looking around to see what the noise was, it had sounded like glass shattering. After checking inside refrigerator, dishwasher ,etc. I started opening kitchen cupboards . Much to my dismay when I opened one cabinet, glass started tumbling out onto the countertops, the toaster got covered in glass, had glass fall actually inside the toaster, assume the suction from opening cabinet caused it to start falling everywhere. What a shock, a complete mess, this cabinet is at face level, I am so grateful this cup didn't decide to shatter while a person was opening the cabinet., have never seen any of the numerous glass products we have owned over the years do this. After doing a lot of vacuuming and wiping down, everything in the cabinet had to be washed , there were particles of glass everywhere!! I took photos of the glass, we had put as much as possible into a flat cardboard box to be able to clean the cabinet. On Tuesday a.m. I put an inquiry/complaint into Anchor Hocking asking why would this happen, is this product that unsafe? As of this a.m. 48hrs later they have not responded to me, I did get a confirmation e mail immediately from the company saying they would contact me , but I think its been long enough.I

SaferProducts.gov consumer incident report 20180706-EE1E7-2147386970. Severity: Injury, First Aid Received by Non-Medical Professional. Product: Anchor Hocking Anchor Hocking 1-cup Glass Measuring Cup (Anchor Hocking Glass Measuring Cup (I-cup size)). Incident: On Wednesday, 4 July 2018, while preparing our family's July 4th meal, an Anchor Hocking glass measuring cup exploded in my hand, for no apparent reason. I took the cup out of the cabinet and ran it under the tap. When I first put it under, the water was still cool. It gradually warmed up to hot, but our water heater is not set too high. So, it's not like the water was boiling -- it wasn't even too hot for my hands -- but while I was holding the glass measuring cup under the tap, it suddenly exploded, sending tiny shards of glass all over my kitchen and into my hand! This was a brand new measuring cup, which had been used maybe 2-3 times before this happened. It had not been dropped and had no cracks or chips. I had to finish cooking my meal with multiple band aids and gloves on my hand! It took two days and a lot of effort using tweezers and a magnifying glass, but I finally got all of the pieces of glass out of my hand. I'm filing this report because 1) It's not like I put a cold measuring cup into boiling hot water. Like I said, when I first started running the water from the tap, the water was still cool. It gradually warmed up to hot. And 2) Aren't these glass measuring cups supposed to be tempered glass, able to withstand boiling temperatures and even the oven??? So, how on earth did it shatter under running tap water?? 3) After doing a quick search online to try and figure out why this happened, I noticed there are, literally, hundreds of similar reports about Anchor Hocking and [REDACTED] glass dishes shattering unexpectedly. Supposedly, they changed the formula for
